FireSmart Designation for Columbia Ridge

 In Columbia Ridge News, Uncategorized

The Columbia Ridge Community Association has enrolled in a Fire Smart Program this year, with the goal of becoming a Fire Smart Designated Community

The advantages of the Fire Smart Designation are many, including peace of mind and safety for all of us and our properties. Having this Designation could also result in increased property values.

A dozen of our members attended a Fire Smart seminar this past December to learn about the process. Jerry Johner has volunteered to be our Community Fire Smart Leader.

In order to make it happen, we’ll need participation of many of our members through different stages of the process….for example some can be involved in cleanup of public and common lands, some can do a neighbourhood walk-by to identify fire risks on properties, some could transport the collected fire fodder to the dump.

We all may have fire hazards that we are not aware of and it would be beneficial to know about them. It could be wooden steps or decks, mulch or logs too near the house, tree branches less than 2 metres from the ground, etc.

Let’s all work together to become a Fire Smart Certified Community

Please let me know your preferred task or if you have any questions:

Training will be provided.

Volunteers will not be working on any private properties but will be collecting information for the property owners use only.

We’ll organize volunteers in teams to cover specific areas of the neighbourhood.

Work is planned to start on the May long weekend.
